A Beginner’s Guide to Search Engine Optimization

Once your website looks exactly how you want it to (thanks to Koala’s Free Website Templates) and the user experience is completely buttoned up, it’s time to go live! But how will people find you? You’ll most likely promote your new website to any marketing lists you might already have, and you’ll definitely want to point people there from your social media channels. But what about NEW people who you aren’t talking to yet? That’s where SEO comes in.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and has everything to do with how visible a website or web page is in a search engine’s organic results. As a general rule, the higher up you are in those search results, the more visitors your site will receive. From a strategic standpoint, SEO involves an understanding of how search engines work, how people search for what they’re looking for, and what terms they use.

HERE ARE SOME HELPFUL SEO TIPS TO GET YOU STARTED

Make sure your website content is ‘focused’. This means making sure that your content remains focused on your primary point as a brand. It’s okay to pepper in secondary topics where appropriate, but you’ll always want to make sure that you weigh heavily on the subject matter that’s the foundation of what you stand for as a brand, and what is most likely the main reason someone sought you out in the first place.

Be smart about how you use your keywords. Once you’ve identified your keywords, always be mindful of how they live in the context of a search query. Consider the real way someone might be searching for what your website offers. (Here’s an example: “Easy to use free website builder). Then, make sure you place those keywords throughout all the most important and appropriate parts of your site: Headers/Titles, URLs, Body Content and Image Captions. Be careful not to over-do it though, or your site will run the risk of being ignored by the search engine spiders because it will appear too spammy.

Cross-promote yourself with smart linking strategy. First and foremost, you’ll want to make sure that you link to your site’s most important pages right from your home/landing page. And on those secondary pages, do the reverse. Create opportunities to drive traffic elsewhere on your site by strategically placing internal links in places where you’re already engaging your audience with relevant content.

Don’t be afraid to link out to other relevant websites.  You can do this by setting up a link list or resource page on your website. Choose to do it only when the content you’re pointing to is complementary to what your message is and will be of added value to your audience – – but not too much that you steal traffic from yourself. The point here is that when you link out to relevant sites in a thoughtful and strategic way, and people click on those links….search engines are more likely to see you as a trusted authority in your space.

But better yet, have other websites link out to you. This has everything to do with inbound links, which are essential to your SEO success. A great way to start would be to offer to write a guest blog post for a relevant website and link back to your own. The more you do it, the more your credibility will increase, which will help down the line as you pursue more and more external sites to link out from.

When it comes to SEO, the most important thing to understand is that there’s always work to be done in order to make sure your website is ranked as high as it can be. There’s always an opportunity to analyze your current standing and work on ways to keep elevating your SEO game.  But at the end of the day, as long as people are coming to your site and sticking around, all the work is worth it.

3 User Experience Best Practices That Your Website Should Follow

Last week, we talked a lot about how the strategic use of a few simple design tips can make your website more appealing to your customers, which ultimately means they will spend more time there. Today, we’ll review some best practices for UX (User Experience) design. These tips have everything to do with how well your website delivers on usability and accessibility for your visitors.

Remember that you’ll always want to get started first with one of Koala’s free website templates. They’ll give you the perfect foundation to start from when it comes to building out your site’s user experience. And then the fun part begins.

THREE UX BEST PRACTICES YOUR SITE SHOULD FOLLOW

Know Your Audience and Create User Flows to Accommodate Their Needs

This will involve a decent amount of time getting to know your audience, researching their use cases, and understanding their specific needs as it relates to your website. A common practice is to map out a series of user journeys based on what you know to be the primary reasons someone might come to your site. Then, make sure that you’ve got the content and navigation structure in place to get those users to what they need. Which leads us to our next tip:

Use Intuitive Navigation

The surest way to lose a site visitor is to make it too difficult for them to navigate around your site. If they can’t find where to go or are caught in navigation circles, they will most likely bail on your site and search elsewhere. The best way to prevent this behavior is to introduce intuitive navigation that makes it easy for the user to understand a) what the prioritized sections of your site are and b) how to navigate between them seamlessly. Lean on what we know about people’s expectations. For example, your website visitors are likely accustomed to primary, horizontal navigation that lives at the top of a website. Leverage that behavior to your advantage instead of trying to train people to look somewhere else for this information.

Be Mindful of the Page Fold

Generally speaking, the above-the-fold content is anything that a user can see on the web page without having to take an action (click or scroll) in order to view more. The page fold will end up being in different places depending on the device that the user is on, but as a general rule of thumb, you’ll want to make sure that the most important content (most specifically your call to action) lives above the fold of your landing page(s). This doesn’t mean you should expect that your users won’t scroll below the fold to read more, but what they see above the fold should be compelling enough to entice them to scroll below.

4 Ways to Nail Your New Website Design

One of the most fun and rewarding parts about creating a new website is defining its look and feel. After all, how it looks will likely be the first thing people notice about it, which means you have a great opportunity to introduce your brand and leave a great impression.

While this process can be fun and exciting, it can also be overwhelming and full of different choices. That’s where Koala Website Builder comes in.  Your first step will be to choose a favorite from our selection of free website templates. 4 DESIGN TIPS FOR YOUR NEW WEBSITE

When In Doubt, Choose Simplicity

A simple design aesthetic will reliably make your website look clean and sleek. It’s easy to overload site pages with lots of images in order to appear as if you’re full of content, but it can often leave your site visitors feeling overwhelmed and confused as far as what they should be paying attention to. Remember that you don’t have to go all in, all the time. Devote some time creating a content strategy plan and let that guide you in terms of what to expose on the site and when.

Get Strategic With Your Use of Color

Use your brand’s color palette as a strategic complement to your site’s overall simplistic look and feel. This means introducing pops of brand color to indicate sections of importance on your site, or as wayfinding tools in the context of navigation. The general result will be a cleaner, more organized user experience, which will keep your visitors around longer.

Invest in Good-Looking Photography

Whether you’re in a position to shoot images in-house or purchase stock photography online, remember that the images you share on your site are ultimately a reflection of your brand and what it represents. Take the time to find unique images that are relevant and on-brand. If it feels too “stock-y” or generic, it runs the risk of compromising the authenticity you have been working so hard to create.

Even When It Comes To Fonts, Simplicity Is King

It can certainly be tempting to choose a funky font to represent your brand. And while there’s lots of different places where you can have fun with more unusual fonts (signage, media, print, etc…) it’s safer to go with a more standard, simplistic one for your site. This is because your visitors will likely be viewing your website across a variety of devices, screen sizes and browsers. A simple font will render more seamlessly across these various settings and ultimately create a better user experience for your visitors.
